What we do

Adding insulation outside the wall instead of inside the stud bay eliminates thermal bridging, pushes the dew point out where it can dry safely, and dramatically improves the building envelope. It is the single most effective upgrade on a Toronto retrofit, and it is mandatory on every new build that meets current code.

We install EPS, polyiso, or mineral wool boards in 1.5″, 2″, or 3″ thicknesses, mechanically fastened through to studs, with all joints taped or sealed and the entire assembly air-tight before any cladding goes on.

FAQ

Common questions.

The questions we hear most often on exterior insulation estimates.

  • How much R-value can I add with exterior insulation?

Typical exterior insulation thicknesses run 1.5″ (R-6 to R-9) up to 3″ (R-12 to R-18) depending on the foam type. We design to either Ontario Building Code SB-12 minimums or to the energy modelling target on net-zero and Passive House work.

  • EPS vs polyiso vs mineral wool — which is right for my wall?

EPS is the cost-efficient default for residential re-clads. Polyiso has the highest R-per-inch but drops performance in cold weather. Mineral wool is fire-rated, vapour-open, and the go-to for multi-storey buildings. We'll match the board to the assembly during scoping.

  • Does exterior insulation work on existing homes?

Yes — it is one of the highest-ROI energy upgrades on a Toronto retrofit. The labour cost is highest when paired with a re-clad event because the cladding has to come off anyway. We rarely recommend exterior insulation as a stand-alone job; it almost always rides along with new stucco, ACM, stone, or full envelope work.

  • Will it change how my house looks?

Yes — windows and doors will appear set deeper into the wall by the depth of the new insulation. Plan for trim extensions, sill extensions, and a discussion about new flashings at every opening. The aesthetic actually improves on most homes.
